A Rock and a Hard Place

The first time Dan Samaria ran for Commission, he didn't win.  He worked very hard on his second campaign, and he did well.  He got elected to a four year term.  As best I understood, Dan also availed himself of the advice, counsel, and mentoring of people like the Rosses and the Andersons.  Frankly, Dan was surprisingly steady, unflinching (while under constant attack from Truppman and her posse), and he seemed to keep his eye on the ball.  I was impressed by him.

But then, something happened (it might have been Roxy Ross' agreement to fulfill a term that had been abandoned by someone), and maybe Dan didn't feel he was free to confer with the Rosses (he was free to confer with Chuck, but not with Roxy, once she became a Commission colleague), and he also stopped relying on the Andersons.  His performance on the Commission deteriorated badly, and he just became resistant to what the rest of the Commission, especially Mac Kennedy, wanted.  There were rumors about whose (very bad) advice Dan was then taking, but the result was that he was no longer a credit to the Commission or to the Village.

Judi Hamelburg was never going to be a creditable Commissioner, and she wasn't.  All Judi ever did, and all she does, is complain and cite herself, and how the Village mistreated her decades ago, about any issue (that had nothing to do with her).

So, when Dan and Judi ran for re-election, I didn't favor or vote for either of them.  The remaining choices were not good, because they were people who had lived in the Village a short time and/or never been involved in Village functioning in any way.  There was nothing promising about them, with the pathetically only redeeming feature being that they weren't Dan or Judi.  There were actually four candidates who weren't Dan or Judi, and if it was possible to consider one of them even less promising than the other three, that was the task.  So, I held my nose, and voted for the three who won.

The Commission is now Mac Kennedy, Art Gonzalez, Jonathan Groth, Veronica Amsler, and Veronica Olivera.  Mac does all the work, Art has never shown any interest or activity, and the other three are essentially dead weight.

Our manager, who has always been useless to the Village, is leaving.  Next week.  So, we have to find a new manager.  Advertisements about the imminently open position were posted in early May.  There are various places to post ads like this, and people who want this kind of job have very active antennae to find these openings.  We've typically had more applicants, but this time, we got only 10.  Yesterday, Mac sent out an e-blast about progress thus far.  "At the Tuesday, June 6, Commission meeting, the Commission held its first discussion about candidates for the manager after the June 2 application deadline.  Several Commissioners had not been able to meet/talk to all candidates in which (sic) they were interested based on resumes and other application materials."  Mac goes on from there, but the rest of the blah, blah, blah is not important to this discussion.

I was very pointed with Mac about this, and I asked him if he interviewed, spoke with, or otherwise contacted the 10 applicants, or those who he thought were most promising.  Yes, he did.  Mac communicated about the fact that he completed the assigned task, and the others did not, and in his response to me, about the conversation the Commission had at its meeting, and how his suggestions were received, he used terms like "I was shot down," "I was not happy about that," "I never understand such a casual attitude when it's time to get something done, particularly something of such import," and his "prepared[ness] to discuss all the candidates and take next steps, which is what I thought was the intent of the agenda item."  (I told Mac it seemed unimaginable to me that I would not write a blog post about this, and he did not ask me not to, or not to quote him.)

I suggested to Mac that the rest of the Commission were mutinying against him.  He's capable, knowledgeable, and determined, and they're not.  Mac was either gentlemanly or resistant, and he disagreed with me.  He said he did not think they were mutinying against him.

Have you ever heard of the "Peter Principle?"  If you haven't, it's a management theory that says that in a hierarchy, people are promoted for their good work, and they're promoted to the point that they reach their level of incompetence.  Four of our Commissioners are exemplars of the "Peter Principle," or Mac's wrong, and they really are mutinying against him, because they're embarrassed and jealous.  Either way, the Commission is not doing the Village any good.  It has no vision, no concept of the Village's strengths and weaknesses, no "institutional knowledge," and no way to forge an adaptive path.  It can't, or won't, even follow Mac's lead.

We could have gotten Dan Samaria and/or Judi Hamelburg back, but we got the three people who beat them, plus Art Gonzalez.  If you want to know which is the rock, and which is the hard place, I don't know.

  3. Gage you need to relinquish being the chairperson of planning and zoning. You’ve been there way too long you have one-sided rules you’re against development you’re hurting the residence of the village term limits on your position you’ve been there more than 10 years enough with your opinions and your views

  4. You’re not married you don’t have any children limited family you’re very mixed up male person that favors your way of thinking you’re in the minority not the majority relinquish the chairperson

  5. Fred, there is no truth to this statement, and I'd be the first to say so if it were true:

"Mac does all the work, Art has never shown any interest or activity, and the other three are essentially dead weight."

  6. I hope this new commission does the right thing and remove cCAGE from planning and zoning. He’s been there way too long. He financially hurts the residence of BiscaynePark they want to improve their properties. His way of thinking is not in line with the 3000 people and 1200 homes in the village cage lives in his own village, which is very different from the rest of us please new commission whoever reads this let’s put it on the agenda to remove cCAGE immediately on this Tuesday’s meeting you can’t have the same people year of the year of the year on planning and zoning you have to mix it up with new opinions new views, new rules

    1. You do not know how to spell Gage, you do not know that Biscayne Park is two words, and you do not know how to spell residents.

Sign your comments. You come across as a dimwitted coward.

    2. You also say "year of the year of the year" when you mean year after year after year.

Also, you clearly do not understand how Board members are chosen. Their appointments are regularly up for reconsideration, and they are only reappointed because the then Commission wants to reappoint them. Presumably, whatever Commission reappoints them thinks they're doing a good job. I can't imagine why anyone would care what you think, since you won't even identify yourself in a blog conversation. I would say you completely disqualify yourself. If you think Gage is not doing a good job, then identify yourself, and tell us about experiences you've had or about which you've heard having to do with P&Z, and particularly with Gage. No one is going to listen to you because you whine about Gage Hartung and/or term limits. If you have real material, be public, and share it. If you don't...oh, what is it they say...oh, yeah...shut the fuck up.

  7. He’s been there over 10 years don’t you think Mr. Fred Jonas that we should change from time to time? Why is it always him he’s really a pain in the ass for a lot of residents that I have to encourage extra expenses when they’re remodeling I want to build something what’s the big secret that he gets he keeps getting reappointed can you please explain since you are an ex commissioner and how is this commission not gonna do anything about it no one does anything about it he’s bad for the village he’s bad for the residence he needs to be removed. He needs to step down give someone else a chance to be chairman of planning and zoning can’t be always him year after year. This is a gay male that has his own way of thinking it’s not in line with the rest of the village residence. This gay appointed chair person thinks it’s pride month 12 months of the year and he uses that way of life when he renders opinions on building zoning measurements how high how low how big of a window it’s all through his eyes.

You are preoccupied about homosexual people. Homosexuality has nothing to do with the issues at hand. "This is a gay male that (sic) has his own way of thinking." Everyone has his or her own way of thinking. Try to focus on the issue at hand. And...

    2. Because gay people, whether the male or female, and you being a psychiatrist, should know that they think differently than normal people think normal people have children have families, meaning biological children, not adopted children this gay stuff is gotten way out of hand children mutilating their bodies. Do you agree with that being a psychiatrist that a 13 year old girl wants to be a boy and a 13 year old and a 13 your old boy wants to be a girl you agree with that that should be totally illegal and you being a doctor or psychiatrist should be in the forefront of fighting that this does not happen to innocent children going back 100 years homosexuality is a form of mental retardation it’s been proven it’s documented in all the medical journals it’s taught in medical school it’s taught in psychiatric schools you probably attended many of these classes so stop with the bullshit doctor it’s wrong 100 years ago and it’s wrong today and let’s get him off as chairperson for building and zoning with zoning and building. Whatever you wanna call it stop hiding speak up he’s got to be replaced by this new commission. Send an email to these new commissioners, put it on the agenda .

    4. 150 years ago psychiatrist would give them shock treatments and you know that’s the truth because you’re studied the results of shock treatments to patients but let’s get off the subject and talk about the most important part of the corruption that goes on with chairpersons of code compliance does not disclose their addresses, Dan Keys does not disclose their addresses. The Anderson’s never do but one Mrs. Anderson is running her code board. She insist that everyone has to disclose their addresses in detail that Hass to be fixed Dr. Fred Jonas go back in your medical training when you were in medical school about the shock treatments that would be administered have you ever given anybody shock treatments and your practice?

  8. Did you know Dr., that every time someone speaks in a public forum whether it’s in person or on zoom at the monthly meetings and code compliance meetings that everyone has to disclose their address the old mayor used to insist on it, and the people that are exempt of not disclosing their addresses guess who they are here we go it’s the Andersons never disclose the full address. All they say is 11 place in 118th St. K does the same thing he doesn’t discloses full address Dan Keys does not disclose the full address. These people have special privileges and the commission allows it even this new current commission doesn’t do anything about it but when someone wants to speak, they have to disclose the full address. What are the Anderson’s hiding that? they’re that they don’t disclose the full address everyone knows where they live. Everyone knows with cCAGE lives everyone knows where Dan lives, why are they giving special privileges not to disclose their address one every single month Mrs. Anderson insist on before speaking you must disclose your address, but yet she does not have to when she speaks in public at the meetings and she’s at every single meeting I haven’t seen one meeting in the last eight years that she doesn’t attend. This is a busybody someone with no life no family no children , a ruthless heartless person

  9. Let’s get back on point Dr. Fred Jonas we need to remove gage with a new chair person. You cannot be hemmed the same time every single time every year after year it’s a form of corruption it’s a form of fraud. Why is everyone afraid to replace him? He’s a nobody he acts as if he was a public official, he has no official capacity, none whatsoever, and he shouldn’t be rendering his opinion, he is the biggest pain in the ass that this village is ever had in the last 10 years that I’ve been here almost in 10 years that he’s been there you’re gonna get some big developer with deep pockets and big lawyers and they’re going to have that gay male chairperson removed and possibly the village will be sued in the process the village is taking a big risk by keeping him there all the time as some secret weapon to stop development to stop improvements to stop people from remodeling their homes
